騒がしい娘

これはむかしむかしトンサワンの 年寄りが話していた

ママヌアは毎日樹液を集めに椰子の木の林に行くのが習慣なのですが、

ある日、そのうちの一人が樹液を集めに出かけました。

後の部分にあるように、樹液を集めるためには、あらかじめ椰子の木に樹液を取るチューブとその先に樹液を貯める入れ物をつけておくことになっています。

そのママヌアが椰子の木のところに着き、樹液を集めようとすると

なんと

樹液を取るチューブと容器だけが残っていて、チューブの中には何もなくなっていました。容器の中には水しか入っていません。

Only the palm sugar sap, none inside. Erh done, there is (only) his water.

樹液はもう取られてしまったとしか思えません。

ママヌアはこう言いました。

according to Mamanua there.

「おいおい、誰がおれの樹液を取っていったんだ？」

つまり、誰かが来て樹液をとっていったということなのです。

Meaning there was (one who) came to take away (the palm sugar) sap.

樹液を盗んでいったものがいたということなのです。

There was (one) who pured out this palm sugar sap.

実は最近ママヌアが来るたびに同じことが起きているのです。

Because this (happens) every time I come, every time I have come here.

樹液はなくなっていました。

Palm sugar sap gone.

誰かが取ったのです。

(Someone) already pours it out.

自分が樹液の容器をセットするところをこっそり見ていた人がいたのだ、とママヌアは思いました。

There was, (someone) spied on Mamanua here.

そこでママヌアは出かけました、早朝まだ夜が明け切らないうちから出かけました。

And Mamanua. He goes, already dark, (it's) still dark, he goes.

まだ暗いうちから出かけたのです

So he already went then.

まだ早い時間に起きて

He gets up when it's early morning.

彼のなりわいである椰子の樹液取りを行う場所に行きました。

This work of his, he goes, he collects (palm sugar sap).

それで

そこでママヌアは見張りました。

「私の椰子の樹液を盗みにくるやつは誰だ？」

"Who is this who comes to steal my palm sugar sap".

あるいは「私の椰子の樹液を取りにくるやつは誰だ？」

Or " Who is this who comes here pours out my palm sugar sap".

ママヌアはその場所を見張っていました。

He spied (this person).

（何日も繰り返し見張るうち）、ある日彼はついに樹液を盗みにくる人物を見つけました。

One day he observed this (person).

ママヌアはその時隠れていたそうです。

It's said this Mamanua hid then,

ママヌアはバナナの木の下に隠れてその場所を見張っていました。

He would go, (he) hid at the base of a banana tree when he spied on (her).

ママヌアにはある声が聞こえたのです。

He just heard (this person).

鳥が歌っている声が。

There was a bird singing.

彼には鳥が歌っているのが聞こえました。

And he heard this bird singing and, oh

いくら見てもそこにいたのは歌っている鳥だけでした。

There was just this bird singing.

とても騒がしい鳥の歌声が聞こえました。

Erh a very noisy (bird) is heard (by him).

彼は「聞こえているのはこの騒がしい鳥の声なのか？」と言いました。

He said "what do (I) hear?", oh. Just this type of noisy bird ,

彼の言ったとおりでした。

ah yes correct.

彼はその鳥をこっそり見張り続けました。

He is spying (on her), he is observing (her).

彼はその鳥をただ見ていました。

He just looks at this, erh bird,

鳥がやってきて椰子の木に止まりましたが、

鳥が止まってからも彼はただ見続けました。

鳥たちが自分の容器に樹液を注ぎだします。

鳥たちは椰子の木につけたチューブを開いて樹液をとっていました。

鳥たちは椰子の樹液を集めるときにママヌアと同じ方法を使ってました。

ngè'ngèと呼ばれる木から椰子の樹液を出すための小さなチューブを結び、

He ties rope that (people) call a "ngè'ngè'"/the small pipe (to drain the palm sugar sap from the tree),

そこに椰子の樹液をとっておくという方法です。

which holds the palm sugar sap.

さて、ママヌアはその騒がしい鳥たちをただ見ていました。

鳥たちは小さいチューブをまとめて縛るために用意していた縄をときました 。

ママヌアは鳥たちがチューブから樹液を注ぎ出すのをただ見ていました。

Then he just sees they have poured out this palm sugar sap.

鳥たちは樹液を飲みました。

And then (they) are gulping (it) down.

チューブを下ろして樹液を飲みました。

(They) bring (it - the tube) down, (they) gulp down the palm sugar sap.

ガブガブ飲みました。

They gulp down (the palm sugar sap).

ママヌアは言いました。「なんと、信じられない。鳥がおれの椰子の樹液を飲んでしまうとは。そうか、お前らだったのか」

He says "oh (it's) unbelieveable (for) these types of noisy birds which come (and) (they) pour out (drink) my palm sugar sap", oh "yes you".

「よし、見ていてやろう。」

I will stop you.

ママヌアは鳥たちを監視し続けました。

He is observing (them) because he is spying on (them).

この騒がしい鳥たちを見ていました。

He supposedly sees these noisy (birds).

鳥たちは体を洗いに行きました。

go (they) have washed (themselves).

鳥たちは体を洗いに行きました。そこには池があったのです。

They go (they) wash (themselves) because there is, there's erh, erh, a pond, a pond.

トンサワン語では池をパパッアン(papa'an)と言います。

ママヌアはこの騒がしい鳥たちを見ていました。

体を洗いに来たこの騒がしい鳥たちは

who come and wash (themselves), these noisy birds.

人間の娘になりました。

体を洗った後、ママヌアは言いました。

after they wash (themselves). This Mamanua says,

「おい、おまえたち待ちなさい。

"oh well you stay here"

俺はおまえたちを捕まえるぞ。」（しかし、そう話している間に鳥たちは飛んで行ってしまいました。）

I will grab you, there's (those who) I will grab.

そして、数日が経った。

So, days went by (days) are going by, the days are coming.

ママヌアは数日前に見た騒がしい鳥たちのことを思い出して言いました。「よし！」

Finally, (he) sees (them) these erh, birds he says "yes".

「私はまたあそこで見張ってあの騒がしい鳥たちを捕まえよう。」

I will stop (them) (and) I will grab these birds.

「私はあの鳥たちを捕まえるのだ。」

I will grab one of them,

そこから実に

何日のものあいだママヌアは見張っていたのですが、鳥たちは来ませんでした。

How many days he stops with (them)?

ある日、ママヌアは試しに言ってみました。「おれは鳥たちを見張るのをやめるぞ」

One of these days he says "I won't stop them (unless I grab them)".

そういいつつも、

After,

ママヌアはずっと鳥たちを見張っていました。

(he) wants to stop these (birds), Mamanua will stop them here.

ママヌアは鳥たちがやってくることを期待してその場所を見ていました。

He sees (that) oh these (birds) will go, they will come.

騒がしい鳥たちがやってきて、体を洗うだろうと。

Erh, the noisy birds come, (they) also wash.

ママヌアは隠れていました。

Then he also hides. Now Mamanua hides.

隠れて見張っていました。

After he hides, He will then stop (them).

さあ、ついに鳥たちは下りてきました。

Done. (They) come down.

鳥たちが服を脱ぐと、彼はあらためて思いました。「この鳥たちはやっぱり人間だったのだ。」

(They) take off their clothes, he sees (that) oh, these birds (are) actually people.

娘たちは服を脱ぎました。

(They) take off their clothes.

娘たちはとても騒がしく体を洗っていました。

They are washing very noisily, they are washing.

あぁ、

Ah,

ママヌアが娘たちの場所に近づきました

ママヌアはは服を取り、隠しました。

He takes the clothes. (He) hides those clothes.

騒がしい娘たちは飛んで自分たちの元いた場所に帰ることになっています。

When these noisy birds returned. Finally, they fly

娘たちは鳥なので飛んでいくのです。

afterwards they fly because the birds

でも鳥のうち一羽だけは椰子の木のある場所に残ることになりました。

this one was kept there (by him).

探しても服が見つからなかったからです。

(they) are searching for clothes, there aren't any left.

彼女は「なんてこと！」と言いました。彼女の服はなくなってしまったのです。

She says "oh no", it's said her clothes are already taken.

鳥たちはみんなで彼女の服を探しました。

So they are searching, these two are searching for these, erh

上下の服を。

one set of clothes.

しかし服は見つかりませんでした。

夜になったら鳥たちは元いた場所に帰らなければならないのです。

「ほんとうにかわいそうだけれど、夜になったら私たちはあなたを置いていかなければなりません。」

we really pity you. But when (it's) already night you definitely are left here by us.

そうなんです

他の鳥たちは服を着て、服を取られた鳥を置いて飛んで行ってしまいました。

騒がしい鳥たちは 服を着て、飛んで行ってしまいました。

noisy birds. After (they) get dressed they have flown away.

飛んで行ってしまいました。

(They) fly away.

そういうわけです。

Just like that there,

そうして

置いていかれた鳥は、泣き叫びました。

erh first noisy bird. She is really crying then ,

彼女は「ああ、私の服はどこ、私の服を取っていったのは誰なの？」と言いました。

She says "oh no my clothes. Who is (it that) waited (and) took these clothes of mine."

「私の服を盗んでいったのは誰なの？」

(He) has stolen my clothes.

それで

Ah, there.

ママヌアは勇気を出してそこに出ていき、彼女に近づきました。

Bravely he went close, (he) went outside here

ママヌアは隠れていたところからそこに出て行ったのです。

Mamanua he went outside from his hiding place. He went outside.

夜になったので、姿をみせたのです。

Because then (it's) night time (he) goes outside, he shows (himself - to them)

ママヌアは言いました。「あなたはどうして泣いているのですか？」

"Why do you cry?"

「もう泣かないでください。」

"Now then don't (you) cry."

「私があなたの着る服を持ってきましょう。私の服を持ってきます。」

I will bring these your clothes, my clothes, your clothes.

「これがあなたの服です。」

So these (are) your clothes.

「あなたはここで暮らすことになります。」

You definitely, because you stay here, here, you (are) here.

「私はあなたを妻にしましょう。」

Really you, will be taken by me, you (are) my wife, you,

「私の妻になれば、もう困ることはありません。」

ふたりは夫婦になり、ついに

子供を授かりました。

ふたりの子どもを。

ひとりは女の子、

one girl,

ひとりは男の子です。

ふたりに子供が生まれたあとのことです。

Ah, after they have children.

ふたりは仕事に出かけました。

They both go, (they) work.

ふたりは畑に仕事に行き、畑を耕しました。

They go, (they) work, (they) are going to the fields, (they) work the fields.

ある日、

One day,

お母さんは子どもたちに言いました。

this noisy (bird) says (to the children),

「お父さんとお母さんは畑に行きますからね。」

"hey, Now mamma and pappa go to the fields.

「これがあなたたちのご飯ですよ。」

This is our food.

「おなかがすいたらこれを開けてね、いい？」お母さんは子どもに椰子の葉で巻かれたご飯を用意していて、それを開いて食べてね、と言っていたのです。

しかし、そこには鍋があったので

So maybe (there's) like this pan there.

おそらく子どもたちはうまく椰子の葉に包まれたご飯を見つけられなかったのでしょうね。

彼らは勘違いして上の方にあった鍋を開けました。

お母さんは「もしお腹がすいたら開けなさい」とだけ言って行きました

椰子の葉で巻かれたご飯を置いて行ったのです

夕方ごろ、二人は帰ってきました。ママヌアとお母さんが一緒に

Around afternoon time both Mamanua returns and these two noisy (bird),

なぜならふたりは夫婦ですから。

Because they both were married to each other,

ふたりは家に帰ってきました。

and because they both returned home. (They) both come back to, the home, at their house,

彼らは娘がいつものように賑やかに遊んでいるのを見ました。

(they) really see this, noisy daughter, yes.

娘は鍋のふたをあけていたのです。

Because only this (daughter) had opened (the pan). (She) had opened (the palm leaf wrapped food).

娘は上に置いてあった鍋をあけて

Because (they) see that (she) has opened (it).

見上げて「わぁ」と言っていました。

She (the daughter) looks up "oh"

見たこともない服が上に置いてあったからです。

She looks up above, she sees, "oh no" these sort of clothes have been put up above. My clothes have been put up above.

娘は見てしまっていたのです。

So it's correct there, because erh, (she) had seen this erh.

母親の服が上のほうにぶらさがっているのを。

母親も服が上のほうにぶら下がっているのを見ました。

This noisy (bird) sees the clothes, (they) have been hung up above, oh

お父さんの方は何も気づいていませんでした。「お前たち、そこにいたのかい。」

しかし、実は母親はママヌアがむかし自分の服を取ったことに気づいていました。

and the child is keeping (it) there, (he) is keeping it there)

帰ってきた母親は見つけた服を手に取りました。

He returns home, (he) becomes, (he) comes, (he takes)

母親、いやその鳥は。

erh the bird.

ええ。

That's right.

母親は上の方にあった服を見て

Because (she) sees those clothes up above.

急いで子どもたちに言い残しました。「お前たち」

Quickly, she said (it) to her children here, " because you, both of you

「仲よくするのですよ。」と。

このように言ったのです。

彼女は、騒がしい鳥は、すばやく服を取って行ってしまいました。

Supposedly, she quickly, this, erh noisy (bird), She went, (she) takes her clothes.

彼女は服を着て、 飛んで帰ってしまいました。

She gets dressed. (She) returns home (and) she has flown away.

飛んでいってしまいました。

She will fly away.

言い伝えによると、彼女は 現在のデレル湖に行ったそうです。

It's said she goes then there to, these days (it's) the lake of Derel.

そう、これがそのお話です。

So this (is) the story, this.

しかし、この私のお話は

Nonetheless, really this story of mine,

こうなっていると決めた人がいるわけではありません（公式なバージョンがあるわけではありません）。

there's not (someone who) arranges it (i.e. there is no one official version).

始まりや終わりはありません。

There is no beginning and end.

しかし、

But,

それにもかかわらず、このお話は

erh, even though these stories,

私に言わせれば作った人がいるのです。

I tell, there was (on one who ) arranges them.

現在までその証拠が残っています。

これのデレルの湖ともうひとつの湖のあいだに。
