ラナン・マテの話

ラナン・マテのお話。

(This is) a story of Lanangmate.

ラナン・マテは（魚を取るための）わなを作った。

Lanangmate made a trap.

このわなは川のうなぎを獲るためのものだった。

The trap was (normally) intended for getting eels in the river.

しかしラナン・マテは他の人と違っていた。

But Lanangmate was different from other people.

彼は罠を田んぼの中にしかけたのだ。

He put a trap in the middle of the field.

一晩たって、わなを見にいった。

After the night, in the morning, (he) went and saw the trap.

なんとわなはシロアリに食べられていた。

Unexpectedly, termites filled the trap.

そこで彼はシロアリを取った。

So he took the termites.

彼は箱の中にシロアリを入れた。

He put (them) into the trap.

わなが壊れてしまったから代わりに持っていったというわけだ。

So (he) brought it as a compensation, because it broke the trap.

彼はシロアリをゲットしたというわけだ。

He replaced (it) with the termite as compensation.

シロアリをもって歩いて、鶏を買っている人のところに着いた。

(He) brought the termite. He arrived a place where people kept fowls.

鶏を飼っている人のところにシロアリを預けた。

He left the termite and put it a place keeping fowls.

彼はしばらく立ち去り、戻ってみると

He left them. (When) he returned,

シロアリはすっかり鶏に食べられてしまっていた。彼は弁償してくれるように言った。

The termite was gone eaten by the chickens. He asked for compensation.

「私のシロアリがこんなふうになくなってしまったのだから、私は鶏をもらう。」

"If the termite was gone in this way, I will take the fowls."

彼は鶏をもらって向こうに歩いていった。

He took the fowl, and he walked to over there.

昔の言い回しにあるように、丘を登り...

Like an old sayings, (he) went up a hill.

ある村にたどりつき、米をついている人に出会った。

(He) arrived a village, (he) arrived a (place where) people were pounding.

そして鶏を米をついている人のところに預けた。

Then (he) left the fowl to a place where people were pounding.

どういうわけか米をついていた人の棒が倒れて

In some ways (lit. which was a way?), the stick of the people pounding fell.

鶏に当たってしまった

(The stick) hit the fowl.

鶏は死んでしまった。

The fowl died.

鶏が死んだので、ラナン・マテは弁償を求めた。

Because the fowl died, he asked for compensation.

「米をつく棒と取り替えてくれ」と彼は言った。

Then he exchanged the fowl for the stick.

そうして、彼はまた歩いて行った。

Then (he) walked again, (he) walked walked walked and walked.

彼は歩き疲れたと感じ、足を止めた。

He thought he was tired from walking. (He) stopped.

彼は水牛を飼って入る囲いのところに米をつく棒を置いて立ち去った

He left the stick (lit. what's it called), (he) put that, the stick in the buffalo shed.

彼は棒を置いて向こうに行った。

He left for overthere.

彼が戻ってきて棒を見ると

(When) he returned and saw the stick,

棒は折れていた。水牛に踏まれたのだ。

(it) was broken by being trodden on by the buffalo.

そこで彼は水牛の飼い主に弁償してくれと言った。

Then he asked for compensation to the owner of the buffalo.

「水牛が私の棒を折ってしまったのだから、この水牛は私が連れて行く」「わかったよ」飼い主は牛を渡した。

"My stick was broken, then I want to take (lit. lead) the buffalo." "All right." "The owner gave (the buffalo to him)."

彼は水牛を連れて行った。

He led the buffalo to over there.

歩くのに疲れたころ、ある場所に着いて

He thought he was tired from walking and arrived at one place.

ジャックフルーツの木に水牛をつないだ。

(He) tied the buffalo to the bottom of a jackfruit (tree).

ジャックフルーツにはたくさん実がなっていた。

The jackfruit (tree) had a lot of fruits.

もうすっかり熟したものもあった。

Ripe ones were on the tree.

水牛をジャックフルーツに繋いでその場を離れた。

He left the buffalo again under the jackfruit tree.

戻ってきて水牛を見ると、

When he returned, (he) went and saw the buffalo. Unexpectedly, (when he) returned,

水牛はもう死んでいた。

unexpectedly, the buffalo was dead.

実ったジャックフルーツの実が落ちてきて当たり、水牛は死んだのだ。

(It was) hit by a fallen something. A riped jackfruit fell, and the buffalo died.

そういうわけで、彼はまた弁償を求めた。

He did it again. (lit. That was again his way.) (He) asked for compensation.

「そういうことならジャックフルーツの実をもらって行く」

Then that was the way, (he) took (lit. brought) the jackfruits.

彼はジャックフルーツを担いだ。

He bore the jackfruits on his shoulder.

歩いているうちにある村に入った

In the journey, he went into a village.

ジャックフルーツを背負ってね

He was bearing jackfruits on his shoulder.

偶然にも７人の娘がいる家のそばを通りかかった

He happened to pass by a house of seven girls.

彼はベンチにジャックフルーツを置いた

(He) put the jackfruits onto the bench.

ジャックフルーツを置いて立ち去った

(He) left the jackfruits.

彼はジャックフルーツを置いて行ったのだ

He left the jackfruits.

信じられないことにジャックフルーツを置いていった

Unexpectedly, having left (jackfruits), (when) he got back,

戻ってみるとジャックフルーツは７人の娘に食べられてしまっていた。

Unexpectedly, the seven girls had eaten the jackfruits.

食べ尽くされていた。

(The jackfruit) had gone eaten (by them).

彼は弁償してくれるように言った。「なんと、あなた方はみんなでジャックフルーツを食べてしまったんですね。」

"Wa." He asked for compensation, "You all ate the jackfruits,

「こうなったら私はあなた方をもらっていきます。」

then now, you, I have to take you."

そして実際にそうした

Then that was the situation.

なんと７人の娘は彼についていったのだ。

Unexpectedly, the seven girls follwed.

７人とも彼のものになったというわけだ。

He took all the seven girls. He conquered (them).

信じられないことに娘たちはついていった。彼は娘たちを連れていった。

Unexpectedly (they) followed. (He) brought the seven girls.

歩いていて川のそばを通り

(They) arrived at the riverside.

川に到着し、７人の娘は石の上に座った。

(They) arrived at a river. The seven girls were sitting on a stone.

７人とも石の上に座った。

on the stone, they are all the seven.

彼は川に用を足しにいった。

He went to the river for ease nature.

驚いたことに、彼が帰ってみると

Unexpectedly, (when) he returned,

７人の娘はいなかった。逃げてしまったのだ。

the seven girls were not there. They had run away.

彼は仕方なく彼は石を取って担いだ。

He was forced to take the stone. (He) lifted (it).

石を運んで行った。

(He) brought it.

ということでこの話はおしまい。

Then that is the end. (It is) at the end.

石には使い道がないよね。

There was no use for the stone.

だからこの話はおしまい。

Then this story is at an end, then finished.
